Abstract

Smart cities have become a central frame of reference for contemporary urban governance. Public administrations are increasingly using artificial intelligence to analyse complex data environments and support administrative decision making processes. At the same time, augmented reality is opening up new forms of visualisation by embedding analytical results directly in spatial and administrative contexts. Both technologies are changing how information is generated, interpreted and used in public decision-making processes. This chapter analyses AI-supported augmented reality applications in smart cities from an administrative science and governance-oriented perspective. The focus is not on technical performance characteristics, but on institutional adaptation processes within public organisations. Based on a comparative qualitative case study analysis, three internationally established smart cities are analysed: Singapore, Barcelona and Amsterdam. These cases represent different governance models and administrative logics that characterise the use of AI-based and immersive systems.
