Abstract

Globally, minority populations experience distinctive psychological, cultural and spiritual stressors arising from discrimination, identity dissonance, acculturation pressures and limited access to culturally congruent mental health services. For many Muslim minorities, spiritual meaning-making and moral intentionality play a central role in psychological functioning. This chapter introduces the TR-TAN Islamic Counselling Framework, an integrative model that synthesises Reality Therapy, Tazkiyah al-Nafs and ihsan-based self-compassion to address these complexities. Drawing upon conceptual analysis, contemporary scholarship, and practice-informed insights grounded in doctoral intervention development, this chapter outlines the philosophical foundations, structural components and six-phase counselling process of TR-TAN. The framework's application is illustrated through a theory-informed case scenario, followed by practice guidelines and future research directions aimed at advancing culturally responsive and spiritually congruent approaches to minority mental health.
