Abstract

This paper explores how the Internet of Bodies (IoB) can support continuous observation, early prediction of health risks, and improved outcomes for patients, clinicians, and health systems. We first outline the evolution from general Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to IoB in healthcare, and describe the main categories of IoB devices and the types of data they generate. Building on this, we show how continuous streams of physiological, behavioural, and contextual data can be transformed into meaningful insights and risk signals that enable proactive, rather than reactive, care. A conceptual “Monitor–Understand–Act–Learn” framework is proposed to explain how IoB systems collect data, interpret patterns, trigger timely actions, and improve over time through feedback. The paper also examines key benefits, such as better chronic disease management and more personalised support, alongside major challenges related to privacy, security, equity, and usability.
