Abstract

This chapter explores how students psychologically respond to AI-generated feedback in asynchronous online courses. As generative tools become more integrated into digital learning environments, students are increasingly receiving guidance from non-human sources—raising new questions about motivation, trust, and perceived value. Anchored in theories of motivation, human-computer interaction, and emotional intelligence, this chapter investigates how AI feedback influences student engagement, cognitive load, and self-efficacy. It also examines the emotional nuances of tone, personalization, and student-AI trust. Practical strategies are offered to help educators use AI as a humanizing tool, rather than a distancing one—ensuring students feel seen, supported, and motivated in their learning. This chapter aims to balance innovation with empathy and offer actionable ways to build psychological connection in a tech-driven learning environment.
