Abstract

Adaptive tutoring systems and the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in online higher education represent a significant change in teaching strategies. The relationship between cognitive engagement which is characterized as persistent mental effort and critical thinking during challenging tasks and AI-assisted learning is examined in this chapter. The ICAP framework, Self-Determination Theory, and Cognitive Load Theory are cited to illustrate how well-designed AI tools can improve metacognitive abilities and conceptual understanding. Yet it issues a warning about learning too little and depending too heavily on automation. Results are influenced by cultural variables, emotional preparedness, and computer literacy. To guarantee that AI promotes purposeful, research-informed learning, ethical design and educators' continued involvement are crucial.
