Abstract

This chapter examines strategies to optimize aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloys for high-speed aeronautics, where lightweight, high-strength materials must endure extreme aerodynamic and thermal stresses. Al-Li alloys, with lower density and increased stiffness, are crucial for supersonic and hypersonic aircraft. The discussion covers various generations of Al-Li alloys, their mechanical and corrosion-resistant properties, and key manufacturing challenges for aerospace components. Emerging methods like rapid solidification, powder metallurgy, and additive manufacturing create refined microstructures and improve mechanical performance. Advanced joining techniques such as laser beam and friction stir welding enhance damage tolerance and manufacturability. Future trends emphasize digitalization, sustainable production, multifunctional hybrid materials, and tailored alloy compositions to meet next-generation aerospace demands. Overall, Al-Li alloys offer vital weight savings, durability, and cost-effectiveness for high-speed aircraft structures.
