Abstract

Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is a novel metal additive manufacturing process based on direct energy deposition destined to revolutionize the manufacturing sector in the next few decades. This process enables sequential deposition of metal on a substrate with the capability of creating intricate geometries with enhanced mechanical properties. This chapter discusses the basic concepts of WAAM, its categorizations, process planning strategies, control approaches, toolpath generation, material choice, defect avoidance and monitoring techniques. Recent innovations, such as intelligent path optimization, real-time process monitoring, and simulation-driven control, highlight the rapid development of the technology. Industries like aerospace, automotive, and tooling are examined for critical applications, while future developments include hybrid production system integration, sustainability-driven practices, and the development of industry standards. WAAM presents an attractive solution for future manufacturing with its flexibility in design, cost-effectiveness and scalability.
