Abstract

The goal of this chapter is to help instructors move beyond the default, minimalist use of online platforms where the learning management system (LMS) is used merely to store files and collect assignments and to avoid synchronous video meetings becoming extensions of lecture halls where students sit passively, receiving knowledge from their instructors. At the heart of this is the principle that technology should serve pedagogy, not replace it. A central tenet is the alignment of technology with the learning outcomes of a course and not using technology just to use technology. This chapter will offer practical guidance, design examples, and pedagogical strategies to help instructors create richer, more human-centered learning experiences in both their online and face-to-face courses.
