Abstract

This chapter introduces the reader to emancipatory education within the institute of higher education. Emancipatory education is an approach that empowers learners by promoting critical thinking, autonomy, and social justice. Its principles energize students by having them actively engage in their learning process and question norms and structures. It liberates minds by having students practice prioritization of historically marginalized perspectives and drives social justice efforts involving collaboration with communities to transform educational systems. Emancipatory education goes beyond traditional teaching methods. It encourages students to critically examine their experiences, societal structures, and power dynamics. By fostering awareness, it emboldens them to challenge injustice. Emancipatory education aims for liberation—both personal and collective. It seeks to transform oppressive systems and create a more just society. Teaching methods that emancipatory education supports include dialogic teaching, problem-posing, and participatory action research. These approaches prioritize dialogue, collaboration, and student voice.
