Abstract

Scope and research questions must be the guiding light for the definition of the research methodology and the development of a review project. A well-defined scope ensures that research objectives remain focused and attainable by considering existing knowledge, its gaps, and potential novel contributions to the field. A rigorous formulation of a structured research question should follow a successful scope definition aiming at a meaningful contribution to the chosen field. While maintain the specificity of the research focus it's important to allow adjustments based on unforeseen challenges and emerging trends in research and policymaking, integrating them into the scope and research question while maintaining relevance and impact. To achieve this, stakeholder engagement should be integrated in research project planning. In summary, a meticulously crafted scope and research question are pillars of a review, fundamental to provide reliable information to research users applicable in a real setting to inform decision-making.
