Abstract

The environmental dynamics of emerging economies do not indicate a rising economy. The number of young people entering the workforce is increasing unemployment in most developing countries, this trend is expected to continue for a few decades especially in India and Pakistan. The paper proposes that sixty is not a magic number for retirement therefore, lowering retirement ages in some sectors of industry will create job opportunities. While developed countries are enhancing retirement ages due to aging populations and shrinking entry of young people, developing countries cannot imitate them since their demographic characteristics are unlike the western countries. Pakistan is being treated as test case where 60% of the population is under 25. Although early retirement would strain pension resources, this could be addressed through revised pension regulations.
