Abstract

This chapter examines how small urban interventions, specifically community spaces and everyday stages, contribute to making cities more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable in line with Sustainable Development Goal 11. It focuses on submissions to the 2025 National Urban Design Awards in Malaysia, highlighting how student designers use modest, context aware strategies to create meaningful social, cultural, and environmental impact. The chapter discusses how participants approach space through opening up buildings, activating in between areas as flexible social zones, and designing pathways that improve movement and connectivity. It also considers balancing formal and informal uses, fostering familiarity, and enhancing resilience and vibrancy. By focusing on these student projects, the chapter shows that micro level interventions matter in shaping urban life. They demonstrate how everyday spaces can support inclusion, community interaction, and the reinterpretation of Malaysian urban identity.
