Abstract

This study presents adaptive reuse as a comprehensive strategy that integrates sustainability with the conservation of cultural heritage. By reusing existing structures, carbon emissions and demolition waste are reduced, embodied energy is preserved, and retrofitting enhances energy efficiency. Socially, adaptive reuse reinforces identity, safeguards authenticity and genius loci, and fosters community participation. Economically, it offers cost-effective alternatives to new construction while stimulating local development and creative industries. Industrial, civic, commercial, and monumental buildings are noted as suitable for reuse, evaluated based on their cultural significance, physical condition, and spatial flexibility. Principles of minimum intervention, reversibility, and compatibility are emphasized, supported by international frameworks. Adaptive reuse is ultimately portrayed as a strategic necessity for sustainable and resilient urban futures.
