Reviving the Past
Abstract
This chapter explores the creation of a new Vibe Hub within the Historic Triangle of Kuala Lumpur (KL), aiming to revive the past while blending heritage with modern cultural energy. The hub is designed to offer a rich aesthetic experience that engages both the mind and senses. The study addresses a gap in heritage enhancement: the lack of emotional and nostalgic integration. It sets out three goals: (1) to examine how nostalgia definitions affect inspiration, (2) to test whether nostalgic experiences improve creativity and collaboration in the hub, and (3) to encourage further research. While some statistical models offered limited support, this study employed document analysis, precedent study, and Google Earth analysis to enhance on-site observations, revealing strong links between nostalgia, fantasy, and visual imagination. The study supports the 4R framework —Reintegrate, Repurpose, Revitalise, Rejoice—as a guide for future projects and offers a foundation for exploring the role of nostalgia in placemaking and heritage renewal.
