Hyaluronic Acid Filler versus Biofiller and Platelet-rich Plasma in Atrophic Acne Scars – A Prospective Split-face Study
Abstract
Objective: The objective of our split-face prospective study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hyaluronic acid (HA) filler and biofiller with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in treating acne scars. Materials and Methods: Six patients with ≤ grade 3 acne scars were included in the study. The right side of the face was treated with 3 sessions of biofiller and PRP monthly, and the left side of the face was treated with a single session of HA filler (Juvederm Volite™). Evaluation was performed using Goodman and Baron (GB) qualitative and quantitative systems, Antera-three-dimensional volumetric analysis, physician assessment score, and patient satisfaction score. Last follow-up was 6 months after the third session of biofiller with PRP. Results: Baseline GB score was 18.83 on the right side and 18.67 on the left side which reduced to 13 and 11, respectively, at the last visit. At the final visit, scar severity lowered by one GB grade in one patient on the right side and in two patients on the left side. Mean baseline volume of scars was 19.05 cumm on the right side and 18.46 cumm on the left side which reduced to 14.77 cumm and 14.08 cumm, respectively, at the last visit. Limitations: Small sample size, open-label design, and limited follow-up data. Conclusion: This study shows promising results with both biofiller combined with PRP and HA fillers in treating acne scars. They aid in neocollagenesis which helps sustain effects even after 6–9 months. We recommend further research to validate our findings.
