Abstract

Scientific research focuses on studies that should be planned systematically before execution. At the initial stage of research, the investigator should determine the topic and purpose of the research, specify the aim and method and postulate the hypothesis. As per the Declaration of Helsinki, it is stated that ‘the primary purpose of medical research on volunteers is to understand the pathogenesis of the disease process and design preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies’. Even the best proven therapies should be regularly reviewed for validity, efficacy, efficiency, convenience and reliability. Misconduct in scientific investigation can erode the credibility of experts and organisations, breach public trust in science and hinder medical progress. Current investigations have provided knowledge about the origins of research misconduct and detrimental research practices. While some work has been conducted in this area, additional initiatives along this path could help the research community successfully address research misconduct and detrimental research practices, thereby reducing their incidence. Hence, this article aims to explore the common research misconduct that investigators may practise and its potentially disastrous consequences.
