Chronic renal impairment in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia
Abstract
Abstract Background Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a hematological malignancy treated effectively with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). However, long-term therapy, particularly with imatinib, may predispose patients to chronic kidney disease (CKD). This research aimed to assess the occurrence, characteristics, and outcomes of CKD among CML cases. Patients and methods This cross-sectional observational investigation was conducted at Assiut University Hospitals from January 2022 to January 2025, including 100 CML patients (20 with CKD and 80 without CKD). Clinical, laboratory, and management information was analyzed, and CKD has been described as an estimated glomerular filtration rate under 60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 for not less than three months. Logistic regression has been carried out to recognize predictors of CKD. Results CKD has been noticed in 20% of cases. CKD cases were significantly older (53.6 against 40.1 years, P =0.001), more often female (65 against 25%, P= 0.001), and had higher rates of hypertension (40% against 12.5%, P
