Dynamic Hip Screw is Associated with Lower Blood Loss than Cephalomedullary Nail in Intertrochanteric Fractures: A Retrospective Analysis of 890 Patients
Abstract
Abstract Background: Anemia in intertrochanteric fractures (ITFs) is linked to increased morbidity and mortality and serves as an independent risk factor for functional mobility. While many studies have investigated blood loss following various fixation methods, there is a lack of research exploring the relationship between different factors that may affect blood loss in ITFs. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate blood loss in ITFs treated with either a dynamic hip screw (DHS) or cephalomedullary nail (CMN). Materials and Methods: Perioperative blood loss was evaluated in 890 consecutive patients treated for ITFs with DHS and CMN between March 2011 and January 2021. Blood loss was estimated using the modified Lisander formula based on hemoglobin levels and transfusion rates. Univariate analysis was conducted considering factors such as type of implant, fracture pattern (according to AO classification A1/A2/A3), and timing of surgery (early:
