Successful Treatment of Menetrier’s Disease with Octreotide
Abstract
Menetrier’s disease (MD) is a rare hypertrophic protein-losing gastropathy with no established treatment guidelines. We report the case of a 44-year-old male with abdominal discomfort and 10 kg weight loss. Laboratory investigations revealed hypoalbuminemia (2.6 g/dL) with normal hemoglobin (14.3 g/dL), distinguishing this from typical presentations with iron-deficiency anemia. Endoscopy showed markedly thickened gastric folds. Histopathology revealed foveolar hyperplasia and chronic inflammatory infiltrates consistent with MD, without malignancy or Helicobacter pylori infection. Treatment with octreotide long-acting release 30 mg monthly for 6 months resulted in complete symptom resolution, 7 kg weight gain, and albumin improvement to 3.8 g/dL. Follow-up endoscopy showed marked fold thickness reduction. This case demonstrates octreotide as a promising first-line therapy for MD through interference with transforming growth factor-α signaling.
