To Evaluate the Awareness, Knowledge, Attitude and Acceptance of Dental Implants as a Treatment Modality among Patients Visiting GSL Dental College – A Questionnaire Survey
Abstract
Abstract Introduction: Successful implant therapy is measured in terms of functional and psychosocial acceptance by patients. In developing countries, only a few patients opt for dental implants. Therefore, evaluating the degree of awareness, understanding, attitude, and acceptability of dental implants as a therapeutic option is essential. The questionnaire was an attempt to assess the same among the institution’s patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the patients’ awareness, knowledge, attitude, and acceptance of dental implants as a therapeutic option. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 251 patients who completed a questionnaire. Data were collected and statistically analyzed, and the results are presented. Results: Most participants had missing teeth, mostly due to caries, and 98.4% thought replacing them was important. Eighty-one percent were willing to replace but were not aware of the various options. The majority of patients know about implants but are not fully aware of them. They were keen to undergo implant placement if needed. Conclusion: Most patients were aware of dental implants as a treatment modality. Although the attitude was positive toward implant treatment, their actual lack of knowledge about implants and the treatment cost were the reasons for not choosing implants.
