Abstract

Abstract As the “diabetes capital of the world,” India faces a substantial and growing burden of diabetes mellitus. However, comprehensive synthesized evidence on its economic implications, particularly through systematic reviews, remains scarce. This umbrella review addresses this gap by synthesizing existing systematic reviews to estimate the annual per-patient cost of diabetes care in India at approximately ₹20,660, derived from the median of total costs reported in two included reviews. This preliminary estimate highlights the significant economic strain. Future primary research with standardized methodologies and detailed cost component analysis, alongside more targeted systematic reviews, is crucial to refine these figures and comprehensively understand India’s diabetes economic burden.
