Sentinel lymph node biopsy guided management of recurrent sebaceous gland carcinoma of the eyelid
Abstract
Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is defined as the microscopic examination of the first lymph node draining the tumor, which helps in the detection of micronodal metastasis. It is usually done for cutaneous malignancies like melanoma. Recently, it has gained popularity for eyelid and adnexal malignancies. Though it has been rarely reported in the literature in cases of eyelid SGC, the aggressive nature of the tumor and its related mortality and morbidity have stressed the need for its utilization in larger-sized lesions. We herein report a case of recurrent SGC of the eyelid with no palpable lymphadenopathy but having extensive pagetoid spread, in whom an SLNB was carried out for detecting early nodal metastasis. The SLNB turned out to be negative; hence, the patient was not subjected to any further regional neck node dissection and/or chemotherapy. Though SLNB has been previously reported in SGC of the eyelid, all previous reports have been in primary cases. It is being reported for the first time in recurrent sebaceous gland carcinoma of the eyelid.
