Abstract

Prof. Babul K. Bezbaruah (President, Indian Pharmacological Society) Prof. Debasish Hota (Editor in Chief, IJP) As we step into the New Year 2026, the Indian Journal of Pharmacology (IJP) reaffirms its commitment to advancing the frontiers of pharmacological science with rigor and relevance. The past few years have seen exciting growth in multidisciplinary research that integrates molecular pharmacology, clinical studies, and natural product exploration, reflecting the evolving landscape of pharmaceutical sciences in India and globally. The journal continues to uphold the highest standards in methodological rigor and ethical reporting, vital for producing credible and impactful research. We recognize the challenges that remain within the Indian research ecosystem, including improving the novelty and translational potential of studies while embracing cutting-edge techniques and collaborative frameworks. Our editorial team is dedicated to encouraging innovative research submissions that not only expand academic knowledge but also directly contribute to public health and personalized medicine. At the same time, it is important to remind ourselves that scientific progress is not measured only by the number of publications or citations, but by the depth of questions we ask and the integrity with which we seek their answers. Pharmacology, at its core, is an applied science in the service of humanity, and every experiment, case report, or trial carries an implicit ethical responsibility toward patients, communities, and the environment. In this spirit, we encourage authors to move beyond “publishable” data and strive for “meaningful” data, i.e., work that is thoughtfully designed, transparently reported, and situated within a broader vision of improving health and alleviating suffering. The past decade has also reminded us that uncertainty is an inherent feature of biomedical research. Rather than viewing negative or inconclusive findings as failures, we believe they are essential stepping stones toward refined hypotheses and safer therapies. IJP therefore welcomes well-conducted studies with honest results, even when they challenge prevailing assumptions or do not confirm popular narratives. Such intellectual humility, acknowledging limitations, reporting what did not work, and resisting the urge to overinterpret data, is central to a mature research culture. Another philosophical pillar we wish to emphasize is the primacy of curiosity over mere compliance. Regulatory frameworks, reporting checklists, and ethical guidelines are indispensable, but they must be animated by genuine scientific curiosity and compassion rather than treated as bureaucratic hurdles. We invite our contributors, especially young pharmacologists, to cultivate a mindset where protocols are not just followed, but understood; where questions are not just answered, but continually refined. In an era of rapidly evolving technologies from high-throughput “omics” to artificial intelligence, curiosity-driven thinking will help ensure that tools remain servants of insight, not substitutes for it. Equally, we believe that the value of pharmacological research is magnified when it remains closely connected to real-world clinical and societal needs. This means prioritizing questions that matter in routine practice: rational use of medicines, safety in vulnerable populations, context-relevant dosing, affordability, and accessibility. The diversity of the Indian patient population and health-care settings offers a unique living laboratory, and we encourage submissions that ethically harness this diversity to generate contextually rich evidence. By bridging bench, bedside, and community, pharmacology can become not only more precise but also more just. The role of pharmacologists as catalysts for improved patient care cannot be overstated in this evolving landscape. Beyond the laboratory and academic journals, pharmacologists have a tangible opportunity to influence patient outcomes through multiple pathways like by contributing expertise to therapeutic drug monitoring programs that optimize dosing in individual patients, by participating in practice teams to ensure rational medication use, and by translating complex pharmacological concepts into patient-centered education that improves medication adherence and safety awareness. Furthermore, pharmacologists are uniquely positioned to identify and mitigate adverse drug reactions in real-world settings, to guide clinical decision-making through evidence-based drug selection algorithms, and to champion research on underrepresented populations and rare diseases where commercial incentives may be limited. In India, where polypharmacy and drug interactions remain significant public health challenges, and where access to medicines is often constrained by cost considerations, the pharmacologist’s voice in multidisciplinary teams comprising physicians, nurses, social workers, and patient advocates is essential for designing pragmatic, affordable, and effective therapeutic strategies. We strongly encourage pharmacologists to step beyond traditional academic roles and actively engage with clinical practice, regulatory bodies, and community health initiatives, transforming their scientific knowledge into tangible benefits that reach patients and vulnerable populations. We also recognize that scientific excellence is inseparable from a culture of respect and collaboration. Behind every manuscript are mentors and mentees, laboratory staff, clinicians, basic scientists, statisticians, and patients who place their trust in the research process. Fostering a nurturing ecosystem where senior researchers model integrity, junior colleagues feel safe to ask questions, and interdisciplinary partnerships are genuinely valued will be as important as any technological breakthrough. IJP remains committed to being a forum where such a culture is visible in the quality of writing, the civility of peer review, and the transparency of editorial decisions. If each study submitted to IJP can answer, at least in part, the question “How does this manuscript meaningfully advance safe and rational therapeutics?,” we would have taken a significant step toward aligning scientific ambition with humanistic purpose. Looking ahead, IJP aims to strengthen its role as an influential platform by facilitating robust peer review, embracing digital innovations for faster dissemination, and fostering inclusivity amongst emerging researchers. Finally, as we look toward the future, we invite our community to view pharmacology not merely as a technical discipline, but as a continuous dialogue between evidence, ethics, and empathy. Let us aspire to research that is not only statistically sound and methodologically sophisticated but also philosophically grounded and socially responsive. Our gratitude extends to all authors, reviewers, and readers for their unwavering support. Together, we can propel pharmacology to new heights of scientific discovery and societal benefit in 2026 and beyond. Best Wishes for a Great Time Ahead; Happy New Year 2026!
