Successful Management of Neuropathic Pain of Osteoarthritis Knee in a Diabetic Patient with Genicular Nerve Block Using Dextrose Neural Prolotherapy
Abstract
Abstract This case report presents the management of chronic knee pain in a 59-year-old male with a history of diabetes mellitus. Conventional approaches including pharmacological agents like opioids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and duloxetine, as well as physical therapies failed to achieve adequate pain control in this patient. After diagnosing osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee based on the American College of Rheumatology criteria and Grade 3 OA knee on X-ray and presence of neuropathic pain in the knee, a novel approach involving genicular nerve block with dextrose 5% was employed. A single session of prolotherapy resulted in significant pain improvement, highlighting the efficacy of this treatment modality in diabetic patients with knee OA.
