Abstract

A BSTRACT India faces a rising burden of mental health disorders across diverse age groups. Mental health nurses promote mental well-being from birth to death by delivering age-tailored education, screening, and intervention in primary care, schools, workplace, and communities. They foster resilience through family support, stress management, and preventive strategies at every life stage, from prenatal care to end-of life coping. There is no official postgraduate (M.Sc.) level sub-specialization in psychiatric nursing, even if certificate, fellowship, and postbasic diploma programs are available in some areas of mental health nursing. On the other hand, subspecialized postgraduate options are already available in other nursing specialties, such as medical-surgical nursing. The necessity of establishing postgraduate subspecialties in psychiatric nursing in India is critically examined in this study, along with possible subspecialties, current obstacles, and workable solutions.
