Current update of gene therapy in dental science
Abstract
Gene therapy is a new area of biomedicine which aims to restore normal cell activity without harming non-target tissues by either replacing or transferring existing genetic material. Numerous diseases, from single-gene disorders to multi-gene disorders, can be treated by gene therapy. It helps to treat precancerous and cancerous lesions in a various ways in dentistry. Gene therapy is a great way to target the keratinocytes and small salivary glands found in the oral mucosa. With developments in tissue engineering and DNA vaccination, gene therapy has great potential in dentistry to cure diseases including periodontal disease, bone regeneration, and even some types of oral cancer. This article's goal is to give a summary of the fundamentals and uses of the gene treatments that are currently available in the field of dentistry.
