Abstract

Abstract Aim: This study aims to evaluate the knowledge, practical experience and attitudes of dental interns towards paediatric behaviour management techniques (BMTs) and to identify gaps in their training and access to modern behavioural guidance tools. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 100 dental interns from various dental colleges in the Malabar region of Kerala. A validated 17-item online questionnaire assessed demographics, observational and practical experience, attitudes and perceived challenges. Data were analysed using SPSS version 26.0 with descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests ( P < 0.05). Results: Most interns had observed and used communicative BMTs such as voice control (93% observed, 71% used) and Tell-Show-Do (92% observed, 80% used). However, a significant gap was noted for pharmacological methods (52% observed, 5% used; P < 0.001). Although 91% found faculty demonstrations helpful, 59% felt inadequately trained and 85% desired further instruction. A large majority (81%) supported tablet-based distraction, but only 10% had access to such tools in their clinics. Interns with access were significantly more likely to believe in their efficacy ( P = 0.038). The most common challenges were patient compliance (58%) and lack of training or tools (21% each). Conclusion: The study revealed that dental interns possess moderate knowledge but variable attitudes towards paediatric BMTs, underscoring the need for targeted educational interventions to enhance competency and confidence in managing paediatric patients.
