Online strength and conditioning among Filipino student-athletes during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: a qualitative study
Abstract
BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic necessitated lockdowns as a preventive transmission measure. A gradual easing of restrictions ensued over time, with the majority resorting to digital modes of physical activity, including youth athlete training. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the perceptual outcomes of online strength and conditioning (S and C) participation among student-athletes during the pandemic in July 2022. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten adolescent student-athletes participated in a focused group discussion and answered three questions underpinned by the Basic Psychological Needs Theory: (1) How was your experience doing online S and C? (2) How would you describe your experience with your S and C coaches? and (3) How do you feel during S and C sessions? RESULTS: Thematic analysis revealed three themes: (1) effective S and C training; (2) progressive performance; and (3) positive relationships with coaches and peers. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION: These findings highlight the role of needs satisfaction in fostering engagement and motivation within the context of online S and C setting during the pandemic. Since natural hazards and disasters continue to cause disruptions in training and classes among the youth today, these findings provide guidance for coaches and trainers in the design and implementation of online programs with the basic psychological needs’ satisfaction as an important consideration.
