Surviving the Forum: Risk Management in Event Projects
Abstract
This case study follows Jade, a newly-enrolled PhD student, who unexpectedly finds herself leading the organisation of a prestigious cultural industries forum. Without prior event management experience and lacking operational support, Jade must coordinate venue arrangements, guest speaker invitations, audience recruitment, and live event delivery under significant budget constraints and limited information, with many uncertainties could negatively impact the Jade to deliver its original expectations. The case explores how project risks emerge when event organisers are temporary and not formally trained in project management. Students will learn how to identify, assess, and respond to risks in event projects, and reflect on the importance of preparedness, structured planning, and clear role allocation when leading time-bound initiatives without professional support.
