Obstructions for Minor-Closed Classes of Limiting Densities Below 3/2
Abstract
Given a graph class π’, the limiting density of π’ is defined as Ξ΄(π’) = lim_{n β β} ex(π’,n)/n where ex(π’,n) is the maximum number of edges of a graph in π’ on n vertices. The limiting density Ξ΄(π’) is known to be a rational number when π’ is a minor-closed graph class. For every Ξ΄ β [0,3/2), we prove that the set of β-minimal minor-closed graph classes with densities > Ξ΄ is finite and we identify it completely. A consequence of our results is an algorithm that, given a finite set of graphs π΅, of total size n, either outputs the value of Ξ΄(excl(π΅)) or reports that Ξ΄(excl(π΅)) β₯ 3/2, where excl(π΅) is the class of graphs excluding the graphs in π΅ as minors. The algorithm runs in 2^{poly(n)} time.
