Abstract

The impact of aircraft noise on the surrounding acoustic environment has gotten worsened with the rapid growth of civil aviation activities, which caused residents dissatisfied with the sound quality of their living quarters. Real-time monitoring and evaluation of the acoustic environment surrounding airports is becoming more and more necessary as airports strive to manage noise effectively. A necessary prerequisite for airport noise monitoring and assessment is the accurate identification of aircraft noise events in the context of the complex acoustic environment of the area surrounding the airport. The traditional noise source identification techniques, however, suffer from low accuracy and large footprint, making it difficult to be widely used in real-time monitoring systems. Therefore, an aircraft noise event recognition technique based on a single acoustic vector sensor was proposed in this paper, which makes use of the omnidirectional sound pressure signal and the particle velocity signal with frequency-independent dipolar directivity collected by the acoustic vector sensor to realise accurate airport noise event identification by analysing the acoustic characteristics of the target sound source and accurately locating the sound source position using the complex acoustic intensity method in a complex background noise environment. By monitoring and analyzing actual noise events around airports, the results demonstrate that the method can acoustically characterize airport noise sources and effectively identify aircraft noise events using only a single acoustic vector sensor. It also provides a new method for small-size, high-resolution aircraft noise event identification for airport noise monitoring systems.
