Abstract

Since light-duty diesel engines are gaining fame, alternative fuels, such as alcohols, need to be used on diesels if anyone wishes to contribute to the replacement of petroleum fuels. This was very important in order to extract ethanol from non-fossil resources. In this research, zirconia is used to coat the engine components with less thermal conduction. When compared with conventional diesel engine methods, the surface ignition engine was tested by evaluating its emission and combustion characteristics as ethanol blends in a diesel engine. The engine is likely to run on 100% ethanol fuel in diesel engines, which is an experimental outcome. Ethanol showed lower emissions of carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbon at full load and the exhaust gas temperature was higher for both loads. The rise in the percentage of NOx emission increases because of the higher rate of heat release and combustion temperature.
