Factors influencing efficient management of solid waste in markets of Akure South Local Government Area, Akure
Abstract
Achieving a healthy urban environment in Nigeria requires the effective management of market wastes. These wastes constitute one of the most critical health and environmental challenges in market areas. Waste generated in urban markets is often left exposed or not efficiently managed. This study examines the determinants influencing the efficiency of solid waste management practices in the market areas of Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State, Nigeria. The study adopted cross-sectional survey. Using a multistage sampling approach, two markets— Odopetu and Isikan—were selected, and 120 questionnaires were administered to traders. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Findings reveal that 32.5% of respondents were male, while 67.5% were female. The majority were married (62.5%), educated (74.7%), and within the age range of 21–40 years (52.5%). The study further reveals that waste generation occurs daily, with plastics (53.3%) and vegetable/food remains (25.8%) constituting the dominant waste types. Recyclable waste accounted for the highest proportion (59.2%) of total waste generated. Findings through the use of a three-point Likert scale – not efficient, efficient and very efficient shows that solid waste management was not efficiently managed. Key factors influencing efficient waste management include level of knowledge, market structure, cleanliness of service areas, attitude of traders, and proximity to disposal points. The study concludes that regular evaluation of waste management practices and improved stakeholder engagement are essential to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of market waste management in the study area.
