Design and Implementation of a Motion-Sensor Lighting System School of Engineering and Engineering Technology, FUTA - a Case Study
Abstract
This work outlines the design and implementation of a motion sensor light control system in the top floor corridor of the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology at the Federal University of Technology Akure. This work intends to reduce the cost of energy being experiencing in the concerned University with the intention of avoiding wasting of energy. The system utilizes a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) sensor and Passive Infrared Receiver (PIR) sensors to detect human movement within 35 meters, activating lights only when movement occurs at light levels below 100 Lux. The methodology combines simulation and practical implementation, with the simulation conducted using the Wokwi Free Online Simulator. The practical setup includes existing lamps, an Arduino Uno, five PIR sensors, an LDR sensor, and a relay module. Simulation results indicated feasibility, while practical implementation revealed annual energy costs of ₦760,233.60 for the unit across the building corridors. The total implementation cost is ₦865,200. This amount will be recovered in 1.14yrs approximately thus amount to saving of energy cost at long run. In addition to energy savings, the system enhances security by detecting unauthorized movements within the building. Therefore, the system is strongly recommended for use in this University. It may also be applicable to other educational corridors and similar walkways in various buildings where electrical energy is wasting. The challenge of encountered is that the LDRs were installed in a location where the light or ray of light will not serve as a false signal to the sensor
