Abstract

This study investigates the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in knowledge management within selected university libraries in Northern Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 100 purposively selected library staff and ICT officers across six institutions: Kashim Ibrahim Library (ABU Zaria), Abdullahi Fodio Library Complex (UDU Sokoto), Bayero University Kano Library, Faruk Umar Faruk Library, Federal University Dutsin-Ma Library (Katsina), and Federal University Gusau Library. A structured questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale was used to assess respondents’ awareness, perceptions, and experiences related to AI adoption, with items developed using constructs from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings reveal moderate awareness of AI tools among librarians, with higher individual familiarity but limited institutional exposure, training, and access. Actual adoption of AI for knowledge management is low, particularly in key functions such as cataloguing, digital archiving, and user behavior analysis. Respondents showed limited recognition of AI’s practical benefits, though they demonstrated high awareness of the infrastructure and competencies required for successful adoption, including funding, digital tools, skilled personnel, and supportive policies. While AI is perceived to positively impact job roles and service delivery, concerns about staff preparedness and job security persist. Based on these findings, the study recommends implementing structured awareness and training programs, gradually introducing AI tools in library operations, promoting awareness of AI’s benefits, investing in infrastructure and institutional policies, and redefining job roles to align with AI-enhanced workflows.
