Abstract

The Bagoué River is of vital importance in the savannah of northern Côte d'Ivoire. Unfortunately, this river is under pressure from artisanal gold mining, which seriously compromises its quality. This study aimed to assess the ecological status of this river based on Mormyridae. The methodology consisted of establishing a gradient of anthropization on the watercourse according to the intensity of gold panning and then data collection was carried out following the established gradient. Redundancy analysis and the abundance/biomass graphical comparison method were used to analyze the data. This study identified three gold mining techniques on the Bagoué River. Mormyridae are more abundant in Boundiali than in Kouto and Tengrela. Redundancy analysis showed that in the gold-bearing area, suspended solids content, resistivity, and redox potential were relatively high, unlike transparency, oxygen, and pH values. In contrast, the Boundiali area was characterized by relatively high transparency, oxygen, and pH values. The Bagoué River showed high pollution at Kouto and Tengrela. However, at Boundiali, the disturbance was moderate. These results are a warning of the dangers posed by artisanal gold mining.
