Technology Adoption and Farm Income of Small-Scale Farmers in Hue City, Vietnam
Abstract
This study examined agricultural technology adoption among smallholder farmers and itsassociation with farm income. Cross-sectional data were collected from 426 smallholderfarming households in Hue City, Vietnam, using a structured questionnaire. Percentage andregression analysis were employed to analyze patterns of technology adoption and identifytheir socio-economic and institutional determinants, as well as associated income differencesbetween adopters and non-adopters. The results indicated that mechanized land and soilpreparation (55.4%), improved seed varieties (45.4%), and modern harvesting machines(34.9%) are the most commonly adopted agricultural technologies among smallholders.Technology adoption is significantly associated with farmers’age, education level, farm size, participation in technical training, and access to agricultural input services (p < 0.05). Inparticular, younger and better educated farmers with larger farm sizes and improved accessto inputs are more likely to adopt new agricultural technologies than their counterparts.Adopters of agricultural technologies earn significantly higher farm income than nonadopters. The results highlight the importance of strengthening agricultural extensionservices through practical, farmer-oriented training programs that incorporate demonstrationsand hands-on learning approaches to facilitate wider technology adoption and supportsustainable income growth among smallholder farmers in developing country contexts
