Abstract

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in Periwinkle (Tympanotonos fuscatus), Oyster (Crassostrea gasar) and Bostrychus africanus (fish) and their human health risks from consumption were determined. Samples were collected bimonthly for 12 months following standard methods from Iwofe creek, Niger Delta Nigeria and analysed using Gas Chromatography. Total PAH concentration (mg/kg) was 2.54*E-01 (periwinkle), 5.23*E-01 (fish) and 3.64*E-02 (oyster). Daily Dietary Intake (DDI) of individual PAHs ranged from 6.99* -E07 – 1.18* E-04 (periwinkle), 7.88* E-07 – 2.09*E-02 (fish) and 9.37*E-07 – 7.43*E-04 (oyster). DDI for total PAH in the organisms was highest in fish, 2.56*E-02, while DDI value for total carcinogenic PAHs was highest in periwinkle 1.24*E-02. PAH4 values recorded were highest in fish 9.10*E-02. Carcinogenic potencies (mg/kg) of individual PAH compounds showed Benzo(a)pyrene in periwinkle (2.47*E-02), Benzo(a)pyrene in fish (9.07*E-02) and Dibenzo (a, h) anthracene in oyster (1.52*E-02) while Carcinogenic toxic equivalent (TEQ) values were 2.76*E-02, 9.25* E-02 and 1.72*E-02 for periwinkle, fish and oyster respectively. Excess cancer risk (ECR) for individual PAHs and total PAH were all
