Abstract

The objective of this paper was to investigate the proximate composition, biometric parameters and organoleptic qualities of wild-caught and pond-cultured Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) from Delta State, Nigeria using appropriate standard methods. Results show that there was no significant difference in the protein and moisture content of the fish. However, the variation in lipid, ash and NFE were statistically significant with pond cultured having more fat (10.41 ± 0.42), ash (9.40 ± 0.35, but lower NFE (5.28 ± 0.14) values. The diet composition of the fish culminated in the carcass quality obtained. The carcass quality factor was significantly higher in pond-cultured (3.806) relative to wild-caught (1.379). The t-test analysis shows there was no difference (p
