Analysis of Technological Barriers Encountered by Arabica Coffee Growers in the Adoption of Digital Platforms in Arumeru District, Arusha
Abstract
Digital technology adoption is vital for the sustainability and competitiveness of Arabica coffee farming in Tanzania, yet farmers face barriers. This study examined technological challenges for Arabica coffee growers in Arumeru District. Using a qualitative design, data were collected through interviews and discussions with 30 coffee farmers, 2 agricultural officials and 3 technology experts. Data were analyzed thematically and triangulation strengthened validity. Findings showed constraints including limited access to devices and platforms, inadequate digital skills, weak user support, high connectivity costs and low awareness of available tools. Despite these barriers, participants reported potential gains from digital tools, such as better agronomic decisions, improved market information and greater efficiency. The study recommends improved internet infrastructure, targeted training and awareness programs, and a multi-stakeholder approach linking farmers, agricultural officials and technology providers to accelerate inclusive digital adoption. If addressed, adoption can raise yields and boost resilience to climate shocks.
