Abstract

This article highlights the decline of kouroubi, a traditional dance with religious connotations practiced by young girls in Mankono during the month of Ramadan. Formerly a moment for presenting adolescent girls on the Kôyaka matrimonial market, this cultural practice has been weakened by contemporary social transformations. The objectives of this study are as follows: first, to analyze the effect of girls’ schooling on the practice of kouroubi. Second, to explain the modifying role of urbanization in the decline of this cultural practice. Finally, to examine the impact of information and communication technologies on the practice of kouroubi. The research, conducted in Tonhoulé with a sample of 30 respondents (20 young girls and 10 key informants), adopts a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative techniques. The interview guide and the questionnaire were employed as tools for data collection. The analysis, grounded in Malinowski’s functionalist theory and Rocher’s theory of social change, shows that schooling, the increasing use of telecommunications, and the urbanization of peripheral areas contribute to the gradual disappearance of kouroubi. This study is intended as a basis for reflection and a call for the implementation of policies aimed at safeguarding traditional leisure practices in the African context.
