Abstract

This study examines the perception of University of Ibadan undergraduates regarding the portrayal of women in Nigerian hip-hop music videos. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research investigates the relationship between the portrayal of women in these videos and the audience's perception of females. The findings suggest that the objectification and sexualization of women in Nigerian hip-hop music videos can influence societal perceptions and reinforce harmful gender stereotypes. Additionally, the study reveals that the explicit content in these videos can impact socio-cultural values, contributing to a shift away from traditional Nigerian values. The research highlights the need for more equitable and inclusive representations of women in Nigerian hip-hop music videos with a view to promote positive societal attitudes toward women.
