Abstract

Corruption has severely hindered the attainment of Nigeria’s national goals despite its vast human and natural resources. It is pervasive across virtually all sectors of the economy, making it difficult to combat and resulting in economic decline, political instability, social disorder, infrastructural decay, weak accountability, and disregard for the rule of law. Several government efforts to curb corruption have faced serious challenges. In response, the Nigerian government established the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate, arrest, and prosecute corruption and financial crimes. Against this backdrop, this research critically examined the challenges confronting the EFCC in combating official corruption in Nigeria between 2000 and 2025, as well as its shortcomings in the anti-graft war. The study adopted the doctrinal research method, relying on primary, secondary, and tertiary sources. Findings reveal that despite notable achievements, particularly in asset recovery and prosecutions, the EFCC faces significant obstacles. The study recommends a holistic, unbiased prosecution approach and the establishment of special courts for speedy trial of EFCC cases.
