Abstract

The shipping industry is a major contributor to the world’s economy and facilitates international trade through its operations. The scale of these operations also means that there is a significant impact on the environment which raises concerns within players involved in shipping operations. The environmental considerations arising from ship operations are identified, examined and analysed in this chapter. The chapter also discusses several environmental developments within the industry at an international level, whilst it examines the need for enhancing environmental performance. The question that remains to be answered is the extent of the implementation of green-related shipping practices. This is addressed in the chapter, which empirically examines the relationship between the adoption level of green shipping management practices and the environmental performance and competitiveness of shipping companies.
