Abstract

This chapter examines the peculiarities of the legal, institutional, political, socio-economic, and geographic landscapes that have shaped the foreign relations of SNGs in South Africa and Nigeria. By focusing on the post-apartheid dispensation in South Africa (1994–present) and the fourth democratic republic in Nigeria (1999–present), the chapter explores how historical, political, and constitutional factors have contributed to the distinct expressions of subnational foreign relations in the two case study countries.
