Abstract

Emphasizing technology is only a tool, this chapter explores the risks of letting advanced digital solutions overshadow the fundamental, human-centered questions at the heart of urban planning. While acknowledging the power and proliferation of data-driven tools in planning and design, this narrative warns against uncritical tech adoption and overreliance. Drawing on lessons from history, such as “appropriate technology”, this chapter promotes a balance between technological potential and human judgment. It calls for an outcome-driven approach, advocating for critical evaluation of tool suitability and creative responses when existing technologies are inadequate. This chapter urges professionals to prioritize thoughtful inquiry and adaptability over technological novelty, ensuring urban solutions remain relevant and effective.
