Abstract

This chapter elaborates on the importance of recognizing the interdisciplinary and contextual nature of urban complexity. It does this by describing several real projects across a range of geographically differing contexts and scopes. These diverse examples focus on methodology rather than prescriptive formulas, advocating for adaptive approaches that are sensitive to their unique contexts and challenges – thus, underscoring the risks of oversimplification against the advantages of developing grounded, comprehensive, nuanced, and flexible strategies that reflect a deep understanding of both the complex development challenges and systems at play. Such approaches recognize the non-replicable and context-dependent nature necessary for effective urban planning, urban design, and strategic thinking.
