Thought experimentational pragmatics and imagination as a normative concept
Abstract
The chapter exemplifies the impact of Professor Itkonen’s work on a current metatheoretical approach to linguistics. It reduces this task to a case study on one of Grice’s thought experimental reports. As a first step, the application of Kertész and Rákosi’s p-model reveals the structure and function of Grice’s thought experimental report. Second, the chapter relates this finding to Professor Itkonen’s view of normativity and imagination in language and linguistics. Finally, the chapter concludes that, in this way, a possible solution to the widely discussed paradox of thought experiments can be inferred.
