Abstract

This chapter introduces an understanding of how partnerships are defined and offers a discussion on why organizations want or need to partner up. Partnership definitions come in many shapes and sizes, but they all circle around some of the same elements that involve responding to a complex world, collaborating, and focusing on some sort of public value. The chapter provides a sense of the variety of partnerships that is out there. The chapter also discusses the key contexts for partnerships in the shape of two concepts, namely wicked problems and the policy state.
