Abstract

Chapter Three builds upon the production history examined in Chapter Two to provide a detailed textual analysis of King Creole. It argues that most critical work on King Creole fails to fully acknowledge its outlier status and places it too squarely as a portrait of teen rebellion. As I demonstrate, the fact that the film is a portrait of grief has not been properly acknowledged. This chapter contends that it is the film’s examination of grief and loss that enables a more subtle representation of teen-parent relationships than it is given credit for.
